Drunk Driving Laws For Tennessee

If you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol in the state of Tennessee, you will face strict penalties. It does not matter if you are facing your first conviction or your fifth. The state takes DUI offenses very seriously. If this is your first Tennessee DUI offense, you probably are wondering what to expect.

First, you will probably spend some time in jail as a result of your crime. The laws allow between 48 hours and 11 months, 29 days of jail time for first time offenders. In addition, you will pay a fine. The minimum fine is $350, but the state estimates that all of the fines, fees, and assessments add up to close to $4,900 in fees. Your DUI is going to be expensive.

Your license will also be revoked as a result of your DUI conviction. Tennessee has one of the longest revocation periods for first-time offenders. You will lose your right to drive for an entire year. If you meet all of the qualifications outlined by the court, you can get a restricted license after serving part of the revocation period. One of the qualifications will be DUI school. You may also have to do some community work or submit to an ignition interlock device.

With the severity of these consequences, you would be wise to seek the services of a qualified Tennessee DUI attorney before you head to court. You might get some of the consequences lessened with the right help.
